Skyrail Tropical Tree day posterThe Tropical Tree day annual event has gradually grown in attendance since its inception in 2009, with more than 300 trees planted in under an hour at the 2015 celebration. The response was so great that we have upped our tree count from 300 last year to more than 500 this year. Cairns Regional Council Division 8 Councillor Jessie Richardson is excited to attend and host the community with plenty of free activities for the whole family.  “Of course this year we have an added little challenge with Level 1 water restrictions in place, but this actually provides us a great opportunity to reinforce what plants are recommended for the tropics to cope with the types of weather we have. If you’re interested in learning more about helping plants survive the hot, dry weather, there will be plenty of advice on hand this Sunday.”

The native species to be planted at this year’s event are suited to growing in wetland areas and require minimal on-going watering once planted. Water sourced from the surrounding lakes will be used to establish the new trees, which will be planted with water crystals that help retain water in drier conditions.

As an iconic local tourism attraction, Skyrail has always been committed to furthering community education on, and engagement in, our natural environment. Our southern Australian neighbours participate in Planet Ark’s National Tree Day in July, however holding Tropical Tree Day in December is usually the perfect time for planting native trees here in our region.

The community tree planting will be held from 8:00am to 10:00am on Sunday 4th December, at the Cattana Wetlands via Dunne Road, Yorkeys Knob. Fun for the whole family thanks to Cairns Regional Council, the Skyrail Rainforest Foundation and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, in support of Planet Ark Environmental Foundation’s National Tree Day. We hope you will join us for #TropicalTreeDay in 2016! Join the Facebook event here.
