Skyrail: Sustainable Tourism Champions

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is the best at sustainable tourism, as recognised at the 2008 Queensland Tourism Awards.

Skyrail’s Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award affirms the rainforest cableway as an industry leader that minimises its environmental impact, conserves natural resources, respects local cultures and benefits its local community.

Skyrail Managing Director, Ken Chapman said Skyrail was honoured to receive the award: "Sustainability has been Skyrail’s fundamental principle from the very beginning; this award is fantastic recognition of our long-term commitment to achieving sustainability through all areas of operation."

The Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism is a new award, launched in February this year, it was open to tourism operators who exemplify a strong commitment to sustainable and innovative business practices and was designed to:

• Recognise and reward tourism businesses that implement the principles of sustainable tourism;
• Inspire other tourism businesses to adopt new sustainable practices;
• Acknowledge tourism businesses that provide a unique travel experience and inspire visitors to promote Australia as one of the world's leading sustainable tourism destinations.

As well as receiving the Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award, Skyrail:

• Was the first tourist attraction in Australia to receive ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System;
• Achieved Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation from inception;
• Is the only company in Australia to have Green Globe Gold Certification;
• Was the first Australian attraction to win the British Airways "Tourism for Tomorrow" International Environment Award.
