George Chapman AO: A remarkable Queenslander

Skyrail News: June 2011

Premier Anna Bligh announced the 2011 Queensland Greats, acknowledging five remarkable Queenslanders and one institution. "Queenslanders like Betty Byrne Henderson and George Chapman and Graham Jackson are not only some of the best business minds in the state but have used their positions to give back to their communities".

"George Chapman is one of Australia's leading businessmen with interests encompassing property development, transport, tourism, retail, aquaculture, biotechnology and media. Chairman of the Chapman Group, including the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, Mr Chapman has made a significant contribution to the community and is well respected in the business world, as demonstrated by his appointments as chairman of Telecasters North Queensland, Ten Network Holdings, TAB Queensland (later Unitab Limited) and the Cairns Port Authority, a substantial founding shareholder in the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and a founder of the Cairns Regional Development Bureau (now Tourism Tropical North Queensland). Mr Chapman has also held positions on the Board of Trustees of Cancer Council Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and the FNQ Youth Assistance Fund."

Since the awards began in 2001, a total of 50 Queenslanders and five Queensland institutions have been named Queensland Greats, and been honoured in a plaque display at Roma Street Parkland.
