Skyrail celebrates World Environment Day

Skyrail News: June 2009

Skyrail is celebrating World Environment Day today, by giving students the chance to win free class travel on the rainforest cableway.

To win, students should enter the 'Reef & Rainforest: Keep It Cool' poster competition, which was launched at Edge Hill State School this morning as a part of World Environment Day events.

Open to all schools across Tropical North Queensland, the competition invites students to create an original poster, mural or wall hanging demonstrating their top tip on how to enjoy the reef and rainforest World Heritage Areas, and protect them from climate change.

Skyrail General Manager Max Shepherd, said the competition was a great way to creatively engage students with their World Heritage environments.

"World Environment Day is celebrated globally and the 'Reef & Rainforest: Keep it Cool' poster competition allows students to explore contemporary environmental issues in a creative fashion, relevant to our local area," Mr Shepherd said.

"Skyrail is pleased to support the competition and work with the Wet Tropics Management Authority and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority on this World Environment Day initiative," he said.

"Skyrail looks forward to hosting the winning class on a return experience in the World Heritage listed Rainforests of the Barron Gorge National Park, later this year."

Students have until Friday 31st July to prepare and submit their entries to the Wet Tropics Management Authority. A selection of entries will be displayed at Cairns Regional Gallery, from 21st August until 7th September, as a part of Festival Cairns 2009. Winners will be announced at the Gallery on Friday 21st August.

Background

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is one of the principle vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. This year's theme is: "Your Planet Needs You - UNite to Combat Climate Change".

The 'Reef & Rainforest: Keep It Cool' poster competition is a collaborative initiative of Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, the Wet Tropics Management Authority, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Cairns Regional Gallery, The Cairns Post and Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises. The exhibition of selected entries at Cairns Regional Gallery later this year, is an official Festival Cairns 2009 event.
