Skyrail Named as a Finalist in 2014 International Tourism for Tomorrow Awards

Skyrail News: February 2014

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway has been shortlisted from almost 200 submissions from 56 countries to become one of 18 finalists in 6 categories of the 2014 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.

Skyrail hopes to secure the Environmental Award having just completed a 3 day site evaluation with Tony Charters, Tourism for Tomorrow judge.

"We are so proud to be a finalist in the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards" said Craig Pocock, Managing Director, Skyrail.  "Ecotourism and sustainability are the cornerstones of our attraction and were the founding concepts that Skyrail was built upon, so to be recognised in this way, is a real honour" he added.

The site inspection was overseen by Max Shepherd, outgoing Managing Director at Skyrail who retires from the industry this week "Ongoing commitment from the entire team at Skyrail has ensured that the company continues to be the environmentally sensitive ecotourism attraction it is today and the World Heritage Listed Rainforest will be enjoyed for generations to come" said Mr Shepherd. "I felt an immense sense of pride whilst showing Mr Charters around our business. He engaged with staff and had full access to the entire operation and I am confident he was very impressed with what he saw."

Mr Pocock is in complete agreement "The main aim of Skyrail is to provide the best, most environmentally sensitive rainforest experience in the world which I think we do extremely well" he said. "We are up against some tough competition with Great Plains Conservation in Botswana and Jetwing Vil Uyana in Sri Lanka also in contention for the award" said Mr Pocock "The people of Cairns should feel very proud that one of the iconic tourist attractions in the region has been regarded so highly at an international level - it is a big pat on the back for the community as a whole" said Mr Pocock.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Hainan, China on 23 April 2014.
