Where are the Barron Falls?

Barron Falls is situated within the Barron Gorge National Park, in the Wet Tropics World Heritage area, and is one of Cairns’ and Tropical North Queensland’s most iconic landmarks.

It began forming over 400 million years ago under the sea during the time of Gondwana. Earth movements, over millions of years uplifted and shifted the volcanic rocks, then through the impressive power of water over time it created the impressive falls that we see today. The Barron River flows through national park rainforest from Mount Hypipamee, winding through the mountains and gorges for over 60 kilometres before reaching the deep rugged falls.

How high are the Barron Falls?

The Barron Falls are a giant 260 metre granite-faced steep cascading waterfall consisting of four drops. The highest drop is 125 metres and is viewable from Skyrail’s The Edge Lookout. This is one of the most stunning instragrammable places throughout the ancient rainforest and in the summer months you can enjoy a shroud of mist and be mesmerised as rainbows form in the gorge below.

The Falls can be viewed from Skyrail’s two lookouts at Barron Falls Station during your Skyrail experience.

The Edge Lookout – an environmentally sustainable construction providing Skyrail guests with never-before seen panoramic views of the impressive falls and gorge. The Edge Lookout was constructed on a previously cleared base site for a hydroelectric development in the 1930s.

Traditional culture of the Barron Falls

The falls were named after Thomas Henry Barron, Chief Clerk of police in Brisbane in the 1960’s, and by 1980 they were a very popular tourist attraction in Queensland.

Known locally and traditionally as Din Din. The mighty Barron Falls is part of the traditional lands of the Djabugandji rainforest people who maintain a close spiritual connection with this land, Djirri Nyundu Nyrrumba, which includes the Barron Gorge National Park.

It was the first national park in Queensland to have native title determination and was given back to the Djabugandji rainforest people in 2004.
