An Iconic Cairns Brand

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

The Cairns Post has compiled a list of 20 “Iconic Cairns brands” that they believe have been instrumental in shaping the city.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway has featured prominently in the Cairns Post’s top 20 most Iconic Cairns Brands, coming in second only to the Great Barrier Reef and joining the likes of the Quicksilver Group, Raging Thunder, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures and the CaPTA Group.

In the report the Cairns Post’s Hayden Smith said Skyrail typified innovation in tourism. “Developed by the Chapman family, the rainforest cableway opened to the public in August 1995. Despite receiving backlash during its creation, Skyrail is now considered an eco-tourism leader.”

World first construction techniques were required to help bring the project to fruition. Even today, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway remains the most environmentally sensitive cableway project in the world.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Skyrail Rainforest Foundation aim to inspire and educate people about the rainforest of the Wet Tropics area. The work of Skyrail and the foundation provide continued recognition and awareness of both the oldest surviving culture on earth, and the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest on earth . This helps ensure the links to an ancient past are kept visible for generations to come.

Over the years Skyrail has continued to add to its long list of accolades. In February 2017 Skyrail was awarded EarthCheck Certified’s highest accolade – Master Certification – which confirms Skyrail as a leader in the areas of sustainability, environmental care and making social contributions that benefit their customers, staff and the local community.

Skyrail directors Dr Ken Chapman and George Chapman also recently featured in another Cairns Post article listing Cairns and the Far North’s 50 most influential people.
